NORTH Tyneside’s first primary academy is now up and running.
Pupils, parents, staff and sponsors were invited to a celebratory event to mark the conversion of Moor Edge Primary School in Killingworth into Grasmere Academy.
The academy, in Grasmere Court, is sponsored by the North Tyneside Academy Foundation working in partnership with the North Tyneside Learning Trust.
The new academy will focus on science, technology, engineering and maths, and it aims to become the first primary hub for those subjects in the borough.
Its pupils now have a new uniform, in purple and black, bearing a new school crest featuring a swan sitting on a double-helix.
The school also has a new motto – ‘learn, flourish, achieve’.
Headteacher Lesley Clelland said: “A great deal has happened to get us to this point. Grasmere Academy really is a community partnership.
“The school building is in the process of being transformed inside and out.
“There was a real shared purpose in getting it right for what we want to achieve, with parents especially having high ambitions for the academy.”
