Newcastle has been revealed as the most sleep deprived city in the UK.
New research by Time4Sleep shows that only 41 per cent of residents feel they get enough sleep.
The recommended amount of sleep for adults is seven to nine hours each night, according to the National Sleep Foundation.
The second worst city was Liverpool with 54 per cent of adults saying they did not get enough sleep.
The survey of 1,000 UK residents found 20 per cent said that they are kept awake at night thinking about their workload.
Results also showed that women are twice as likely to hit the snooze button in the morning (22 per cent) compared to men.
Jonathan Warren, director of Time4sleep.co.uk, said: “It’s interesting to discover the varied bedtime habits across the UK, especially seeing how many of us are guilty of pressing the snooze button.
“Needing those extra minutes in bed shows how many of us struggle to get the recommended amount of sleep each night, leaving many with no choice but to make up for lost time by cramming extra hours in at the weekend.
“It can be hard leaving your workload in the office and not to think about work late at night but it’s important we try and make our home a stress-free environment.
“Establishing a routine around bedtime and writing down your worries or thoughts for the day will help you unwind and make getting off to sleep easier.”
