WAR heroes were honoured by North Tyneside Council during a ceremony to mark Armed Forces Day.
The event, which was held at the council’s HQ on Cobalt Business Park, began with the raising of an Armed Forces Day flag.
It was then followed by a presentation of the HM Armed Forces Veteran Lapel Badge to 33 ex-service personnel.
It comes after the council, with the support of the North Tyneside Veterans Committee, urged service men and women eligible for a badge to contact them. The authority then made an application to the Ministry of Defence on their behalf.
North Tyneside Elected Mayor Linda Arkley said: “I pleased to be able to honour the men and women who have made such an outstanding contribution to our country.
“As a council, we are working hard to ensure our members and ex-members of the armed forces and their families are well supported and integrated into the community.
“The lapel badge and presentation ceremony is one way of showing how grateful and proud we are.”
Last month, the Armed Forces Covenant was signed in North Tyneside, further strengthening the council’s support for serving personnel, veterans and their families.
Armed Forces Day is on Saturday, June 30.
