Two students have been given a boost in their fundraising mission to help families thousands of miles away.
Whitley Bay High School sixth formers Bethany Wilson and Sarah Robson have received a cheque for £150 from Whitley Lodge Community Spirit.
The 17-year-olds are taking part in a project with Cullercoats-based Christian charity M10 Missions in August, visiting Ensenada in Mexico as part of a team of volunteers carrying out various work.
They have also organised supermarket bag packs, cake stalls, raffle and a race night on Saturday, April 23, at Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade Watch House Museum.
Canon, Sue Hart, chair of Whitley Lodge Community Spirit (WLCS), said: “We are delighted to help Bethany and Sarah with such a wonderful opportunity in giving something back to families within communities less fortunate than ourselves and they will be taking a little piece of WLCS with them in the form of a small plaque to go on one of the houses they are helping to build.”
Recent WLCS donations have also included a £400 donation to Whitley Lodge Under Fives to enable the purchase of some new play equipment: a dressing up wardrobe and drying rack for the children’s artwork.
Winners of the WLCS Christmas card competition, organised through Coquet Park First School, were Evie Hughes, 4, Daisy Telford, 5, and Esme Wilkinson, 6, each receiving a £20 gift voucher for their creative Christmas designs too.
The on-going support received at all the Whitley Lodge Community Spirit activities through out the year enables WLCS to invest the monies raised back into community facilities and events for the benefit of the young to the old.
Plans are now underway for the big Summer Fair with a date of Sunday, June 5, set.
Early confirmation includes the return of the popular ‘The Pimms Van’, superheroes, bouncy castle and a range of stalls and entertainment for all the family. Last year’s fair saw in excess of 2,000 people enjoying the day!
WLCS are therefor looking for more volunteers to get involved pre, during or post fair and welcome all to their next meeting on March 2nd at 6pm in The Kittiwake.
Whitley Lodge Community Spirit is a non-profit organisation raising funds for the local Whitley Lodge area to run the Summer Fair and Christmas events by offering free or low cost activities for all the family to enjoy. Run by volunteers from the Whitley Lodge businesses, St Mary’s Church and residents within the area.
