A pedestrian is in hospital after being struck by a car in a suspected hit-and-run incident.

The 72-year-old man had been crossing Saville Street, in North Shields, when he was struck at 9.41am today (Friday).

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where his condition is not life threatening.

The care believed to have been involved in the accident was then spotted in another crash on the North Shields Fish Quay, where it struck a parked car.

Following enquiries, a 28-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman have both been arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle and are currently in custody.

The vehicle involved in the incident has been recovered and police are continuing to make enquiries.
