A small piece of history has been found hidden beneath a floor.

Anthony Walker was working on his parents’ house in Buttermere Road, Cullercoats, when he lifted up the floor in the kitchen and found a full copy of the News Guardian.

Dated December 3, 1987, the main story of the week saw the future of the Spanish City again in the headlines with questions asked of a supermarket moving onto the site after a consortium looked to buy the site and put plans in.

Anthony said: “It’s a fascinating read. I’m chuffed I found it.

“It’s interesting looking back at the stories from nearly 30 years ago. There is a story about the poll tax while jobs in bars are being advertised for £2 an hour.

“My parents moved in last December and we had just got around to taking up the floor when we found this. There are other sheets of newspaper there but this was the only full paper.”
