Generous residents have helped raise £1,200 as part of Paint the Town Pink.

A total of 14 events took place in Whitley Bay as part of the breast cancer awareness campaign, culminating in an afternoon tea at Homemade at Jane’s cafe in Whitley Lodge.

It raised £140, despite Nadia Scott’s cat knocking the main cake on the floor the night before, leading to a late scramble to bake a new one.

The star prize in a raffle was a canvas of St Mary’s Lighthouse bathed in pink, taken by Tina Stobbs.

Campaign co-ordinator Shirley Hallam said: “It’s been a fantastic effort by everyone.

“The money raised will help fund research at Newcastle University.’’
