Plans for a new multi-million pound training ground for Newcastle United Football Club in North Tyneside have been given the green light.
The local authority’s planning committee agreed on Tuesday to the club’s proposals to demolish their existing Darsley Park complex in Benton and replace it with a new facility.
The new centre will include a gym, 20-metre swimming pool, hydrotherapy and fitness pool, living and dining areas, a barbecue area, and specialist equipment to aid injury prevention and recovery.
The plans also include provision for a number of private prayer rooms.
As part of the plans, nine trees will be cut down to make way for the new building. The car park will also be redesigned.
The football club first announced plans to redevelop the 35-acre training ground site into a state-of-the-art training complex in November last year.
The club hope to start work in May 2015 and hope to complete it in early 2016.
The new construction will also create a presentation suite for match analysis and a new media suite.
