A pledge has been made to ensure the regeneration of Spanish City is completed – no matter what the cost.
Mayor Norma Redfearn says it is vital for Whitley Bay and North Tyneside that work to regenerate the Grade II-listed Dome and surrounding area is finally finished.
Initial plans have stalled after a bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery failed, with a new bid being submitted.
But should that fail, Mrs Redfearn said North Tyneside Council would borrow money to complete the work.
She said: “The Dome and Swan Hunter redevelopments must be completed before we do anything else.
“We’ve got to finish the Dome. We will borrow whatever is needed if we have to.”
• A special open event is taking place on Tuesday, September 24, and Tuesday, October 1, between 2pm and 6pm, to allow people to have a look inside the Spanish City Rotunda to see what work is needed.
Council officers will be on hand to answer questions.
Mrs Redfearn added: “I promised to listen to what residents had to say and that’s why I am asking them to help us to secure the Dome’s future and show us how strongly they want the work to be finished.”
