A Tynemouth aquarium has a bunch of unusual new residents – to the delight of followers of a hot new craze.

The Blue Reef Aquarium is now home to a host of aquatic-themed Pokemon Go characters.

Staff noticed an increase in passers-by and visitors using their smartphones in and around the aquarium. They enlisted the expertise of a younger member of the team who confirmed it was part of the augmented reality game which has become a global phenomenon.

Rosie Harris said: “Most of us didn’t really have any idea what was going on so I downloaded the Pokemon Go app on my phone and discovered there are at least four characters – Jynx, Magikarp, Poliwag and Zubat – in our display areas. We’ve also discovered our outdoor chicken run is a Pokestop.”

Pokemon Go players move around the real world in search of hundreds of virtual monster characters. They can also visit Pokestops – typically landmarks or buildings – and collect free items in the game. The main aim is to catch Pokemon, which pop up along the way.

The aquarium is offering £2 off the normal admission price to anyone who has the Pokemon Go app downloaded on their smartphone.
