A woman was hit with a hammer after two men forced their way into her Northumberland home last night.

The men knocked at the door of a house in The Crescent in Seghill between 9.40pm and 9.50pm yesterday and then forced their way in and assaulted the 39-year-old woman with a hammer.

One of the men then searched the premises and the pair left in a dark-coloured vehicle. It is not known if anything was stolen.

The woman suffered a small cut to her head and was taken to hospital and released after treatment.

The offenders are described as both white men wearing dark clothing.

One was six feet tall, of skinny build, wearing a dark-coloured scarf covering the bottom half of his face and a hood.

The second was five feet six inches tall, of medium build, with a spotty complexion and dirty blonde hair covered by a hood.

Police officers are on patrol in the area carrying out house-to-house inquiries and are available to speak to any residents about the incident.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to contact them. Anyone with information can contact police on 101, extension 69191, quoting log number 1276 of 21/08/15 or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
