Police have named the taxi driver who was killed on the A19 in North Tyneside in the early hours of Saturday.
He has been named as David Hope, 43 and from Wallsend. As previously reported by the Guardian, he was hit by a car after stopping at the scene of an incident in which a car collided with the central reservation on the A19 near to the Killingworth turn-off.
Officers and paramedics attended the scene and he was given urgent treatment at the roadside, however, he died from his injuries.
The driver of the car who collided with him stopped at the scene and is helping officers with inquiries. He has not been arrested. Another man, 24, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed pending further inquiries.
Inquiries are ongoing into the collision and police are continuing to appeal for anyone with any information to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 140 15/07/16.
