A new initiative has been launched by police in Whitley Bay to make allotments more secure.

Following a rise in the number of allotments being broken into in Hillheads and Shiremoor, Whitley Bay neighbourhood policing team has launched ‘Allotment Watch’.

As well as increasing patrols around allotments, officers are hoping allotment holders will report any suspicious activity as well as work with them to make their plots even safer.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Jonathan May said: “CSOs are visiting allotments in the area to offer reassurance to plot holders and tell them about the scheme.

“We want allotment holders and the local community to work with us and our partner agencies to help stop these criminals.

“The team is also offering plot holders shed alarms to ensure sheds are secure.”
