A Whitley Bay pub has been toasting its new look with regulars following a major refurbishment.

Staff at The Beacon Hotel in Earsdon Road were joined by regulars and special guest Mary Campbell for the re-opening.

Mary, who has been a regular for nearly 50 years and still goes two to three times a week, was on hand to cut the ribbon following the refurbishment by owner Ember Inns.

And staff were also delighted to hand over a cheque for nearly £1,300 to Help for Heroes following a year of fundraising events.

The money was raised during their Sunday night pub quizzes and a recent cake sale, which raised nearly £300.

The refurbishment work took place over five days and has seen a revamp inside and a new beer garden created.

Pub manager Paul Barrett said: “We’ve revamped the place inside and out.

“We’ve had a lot of positive comments from customers. It’s all very comfortable furnishing inside and a home from home atmosphere.

“We were delighted to welcome Mary to carry out the honours. She has been coming here nearly 50 years and is well loved by everyone.”
