Public create leads for Whitley Bay rape appeal

POLICE have had a good response to appeals for information about a rape in North Tyneside.

The rape took place at 3.45am on Sunday, October 16, in the rear lane of Esplanade Place, behind Zync Bar in Whitley Bay.

The 29-year-old woman was with a friend, a man, following a night out when they were approached by an unknown man who attacked the friend, knocking him out.

The offender assaulted the woman and then raped her before making off in the direction of the promenade.

Police have had a good response after an e-fit of the attacker was publicly released, together with comments from the victim appealing for help from the public to catch the attacker.

Detective Inspector Paul Race said: “We’ve continued to receive an excellent response from the public over the weekend after the release of the e-fit and statement from the victim. This has provided us with a few more lines of enquiry to investigate.

“We’re continuing to do everything we can to find the man responsible for this incident. I’d like to thank the public for their continued help and I’d urge people to continue calling in with any information they may have.”

Patrols were stepped up around pubs and clubs in the town over the weekend ro reassure the public, with officers reinforcing the importance of personal safety to revellers.
