Pubs put on a show of strength for New Year

Pub-goers put their strength to the test for an annual New Year’s Day festivity.

The Rockcliffe Arms pub played host to the annual tug ‘o’ war contest against Berties Club.

And it was the visitors who took the honours thanks to a 2-0 win in the competition on January 1.

Elsewhere on the day, the Monkseaton Morrismen entertained the crowds with their annual show on New Year’s Day outside The Ship Inn and Black Horse, while hundreds of hardy swimmers took part in the annual New Year’s Day dip at Whitley Bay beach.
