AN ENGLISHMAN took the honours in the first world championships of its kind held in the UK.
In a strong field of predominantly German and Dutch players, Richard Ratcliffe, from Sheffiled swept the board at the Stratego World Championships.
The event, organised by Mind Sports World and sponsored by Bay Games, was held at the Parks Leisure Centre in North Shields.
In Stratego variants known as Barrage, Duell and Ultimate Lightning, Richard powered through the field but in the main event, the Classic, he had to fight hard against reigning world champion Tim Slagboom and the strongly favoured Pim Niemeijer, both from Holland.
Richard became the first British world champion in the discipline and only the second non-Dutchman to win the title out of 15 international events.
The junior title went to German Adrian Hangg while Holland won the teams event.
Organisers said none of the competitors had previously visited the north east and were deeply impressed by the welcome, hospitality and service they received.
Regular social mind sports sessions, organised by Bay Games, take place at Whitley Bay’s Berkeley Tavern every Wednesday from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
