Reassurance over plans for micropub

Applicants behind plans for a pub near a nursery have moved to quash any fears from local residents.

Concerns had been raised by staff and parents at Children’s Choice Nursery as well as some local residents over proposals to open a micropub near them in Monkseaton Metro Station.

More than 1,200 people have signed a petition against the plans with concerns voiced over the impact of drinkers near the children.

However, the application has received support from local people who have welcomed moves to bring an empty unit at the station in Norham Road back into use.

And applicant Andrew Findlay says the micropub – to be called Left Luggage Room if it is approved by planners – would not be a rowdy establishment.

He said: “We’re not going to be a rowdy pub there to get people drunk.

“We won’t have hundreds of people descending on us for loud music.

“We’ve applied for live music but that will be unamplified acoustic music just for evenings or weekends so that won’t impact on the nursery.

“There is a good deal of separation between the two venues.”

Andrew added: “We’re delighted at the amount of interest that has been generated by the micropub.

“Although there have been some concerns, the response has been overwhelmingly positive both from local residents and local business and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have taken the time to comment.

“We’re hopeful that we’ll soon be able to bring Monkseaton metro station’s historic left-luggage room and booking office back into use with a new type of pub for the area, selling a range of quality craft-ales, wines and other drinks in a conversation friendly setting.

“We won’t be brewing at the pub, but we do have our own recipes which we will be creating in partnership with local craft-ale producers.”

If approved, plans would see a ‘sympathetic’ transformation of the former parcel and left luggage room at the station.

Andrew said: “After a long search for the right venue, we were lucky enough to stumble upon the site.

“We aim to retain the character of the place by doing the minimal amount of work possible to be ready to open.

“The former Booking Office will be partitioned into a cellar and toilets. The Parcel and Left Luggage Room will be the bar and seating area.

“We will also have a seating area out front underneath the glorious glass canopy.

“As parents of young children, being family friendly is important to us too - we will welcome families and a baby change room will be provided.”
