A Killingworth firefighter was recognised from Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service last week when he reached his 100th birthday.
Joe Dixon visited the headquarters in Washington in Sunderland with his son Bob and daughter-in-law Marie to be presented with a surprise engraved medal, presented by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle Councillor Margaret Wood.
He was also reunited with a vintage fire engine he used to drive when he was serving back in the 1930’s.
Mr Dixon joined the Fire Brigade on June 6 1939 and retired on August 27 1964 after 25-years of service.
He had a short break in service from 1943 -1944 when he joined the RAF and became a bomber command flight engineer.
