Two lifeguards have been honoured for their work helping protect lives at the coast.

Donna Robson and Paula Richardson, trainers from North Sea Volunteer Lifeguards (NSVL), were honoured by the Royal Lifesaving Society in London.

They were presented with a Certificate of Thanks from former Commonwealth and Olympic swimmer Mark Foster.

Donna and Paula volunteer to teach both children and adults on Whitley Bay beach and at Tynemouth Pool.

They teach lifesaving skills such as survival, first aid and water rescue to rookie lifeguards from age nine up to pool and beach lifeguards aged 16 and over.

Club chairman Joe Welsh said: “NSVL is proud to have its members recognised for their commitment and the hours they spend at the club, both teaching and carrying out committee roles.”

“Without dedicated volunteers, from poolside helpers to parents who help out on the committee, NSVL club would not exist.”
