Award-winning ferry operator DFDS Seaways saw a record number of passenger crossings over the summer of 2013 on its North Shields to Amsterdam route.
More than 65,000 passengers sailed in August alone from the North Shields dock, an increase of almost 4,000 compared to last year.
During August this year, 65,302 passengers sailed with DFDS Seaways between the Tyne and the Dutch port, compared to 61,551 in August 2012.
Max Foster, passenger director for the company said: “Every ferry sailing on our Newcastle to Amsterdam route in August was fully booked, which is a fantastic achievement, especially given the continuing tough economic conditions.
“Striving to deliver excellent customer service is at the heart of everything we do and we are delighted that the hard work and dedication of our onboard and shore-based teams, coupled with our high quality ferries, seems to be striking a cord with our customers.
“As the summer draws to a close and autumn approaches, we are continuing to see a trend towards passengers taking more mini-breaks rather than longer and more expensive holidays.”
DFDS Seaways cruise ferry service departs daily from the port in North Shields at 5pm and arrives at 9.30am the next morning into Ijmuiden ferry port.
