Work is due to begin on major improvements to a borough leisure facility.

The health suite and gym facilities at Tynemouth Pool are to be improved as part of a programme by North Tyneside Council to invest in its leisure sites.

Our investment at Tynemouth Pool keeps our facilities right up to date, with the latest gym equipment to help our members get the maximum benefit from their workouts.

Coun Eddie Darke, cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism

Work, including redecoration, is currently taking place in the health suite and associated changing rooms while the on-site gym will close on Saturday, March 21, for full refurbishment and the installation of new machines.

Among the machines being brought in are five new treadmills, two adaptive motion trainers and an upgrade to the Fitlinxx system, which tracks and records workouts so gym users can review their session.

The gym is expected to re-open on Saturday, April 11.

Coun Eddie Darke, cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “Our investment at Tynemouth Pool keeps our facilities right up to date, with the latest gym equipment to help our members get the maximum benefit from their workouts.

“The investment we have made in our leisure facilities – and the quality of our service across the borough – has been recognised by residents and is reflected in the number of new Contours members.”

Contours, the council’s sport and leisure membership scheme, gives members unlimited access to four pools, five gyms, two spas and over 195 classes ranging from aquafit to zumba.

Further investment will follow later this spring, when the council brings the innovative ‘In Body’ technology to all of its gyms.

‘In Body’ uses an electrical pulse to measure body strength, muscle mass and body fat percentage.

‘In Body’ is currently available at The Parks for those on the council’s ‘Weight Worries’ programme and, due to its popularity, more machines are being installed at the other sites for use by all gym users.

The council’s Contours leisure membership scheme gives access to all facilities at Tynemouth Pool, Hadrian Leisure Centre in Wallsend, The Lakeside Centre in Killingworth, Waves at Whitley Bay and The Parks Sports Centre in North Shields.
