A search has taken place off the north east coast after reports of a person in the water.

Rescue teams were called out at around 3.30pm today (Monday) after reports of someone in the water off Whitley Bay, near the Rendezvous cafe.

Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade carried out a coastal search while Cullercoats Lifeboat and a Coastguard Helicopter searched the water.

However, after 45 minutes all teams were stood down after nothing was found.

A spokesperson for Cullercoats Lifeboat said: “There was driftwood spotted in the water near the cafe so it may have been that.

“We searched the coastline for 45 minutes, reported back to the Coastguard and we stood down.”

A spokesperson for the TVLB said: “It was a false alarm with good intent.”
