A popular chippy is in the running to be crowned best fish restaurant in the country.

Longsands Fish Kitchen has been shortlisted in the Coast Fish Restaurant of the Year category at the Fishing News Awards.

The establishment, which opened last year in Front Street, Tynemouth, is now looking for public votes to secure the title, with The Old Boat House, in Amble, the only other restaurant in the North East on the shortlist.

Celebrity chef and awards host Simon Rimmer said: “It’s no secret that the North East of England has long been a real hub for some of the world’s best seafood, so it’s not surprising to see these nominations for an award.

“The dedication shown by everyone in the seafood industry in the North East to maintain such a consistent, high-quality product is certainly worthy of recognition and I’m delighted I’ll get to play a part in celebrating these achievements.”

The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Aberdeen on May 26, the evening before the Aberdeen Fishing Expo.

David Linkie, editor of Fishing News, which is running the awards, said: “Fishing is a way of life, often continuing through the generations, but the daily risks that our fishermen face should never be underestimated.

“Knowing they are providing the best quality fish and seafood is reward in itself, but we feel that they deserve further recognition.”

“This is precisely why Fishing News is hosting these awards; to celebrate the endeavour, determination and gritty commitment of those involved in the UK’s fishing industry over the past year.”
