Two mechanics are hoping they are in the fast lane after hitting top gear with their new business.

Porsche specialists Gary Heslop and Dean McPhee invested their life savings in D&G Motor Engineers on West Chirton Industrial Estate after seeing an opportunity to set up an independent motor servicing centre to meet the needs of drivers of Porsche and other top end marques

Gary, 29, from Whitley Bay, and Dean, 23, from Seaton Delaval, got advice and specialist help from The Business Factory to help turn their dream into a reality.

Within weeks of trading, D&G Motor Engineers has secured a number of fleet deals from garages in the region.

And the pair are already considering the appointment of a modern apprentice to help meet customer demand.

Gary said: “Dean and I are expert mechanics and never doubted our ability in this area but neither of us had run our own business before.

“A business like ours requires a significant investment upfront to access the same sophisticated computerised diagnostic equipment as the mainstream dealerships, so we needed to know that our plan was build on strong foundations.

“Having The Business Factory advisers help us to draft our business plan instilled us with confidence.

The Business Factory is part of The Raising Enterprise North Tyneside project, funded by North Tyneside Council and ERDF.

Business adviser Nick Turner gave them the confidence they had a solid business idea while specialist commercial property consultant Paul Murphy helped find suitable premises.

Coun Frank Lott, cabinet member responsible for economic development, said: “This new level of support and help is hugely instrumental in helping business start-ups on North Tyneside to flourish as well as making the borough an extremely attractive place to set up in business.

“It was fantastic to hear from Gary and Dean that the specialist support they received from The Business Factory has set them on the road to success and saved them a lot of money.

“I wish them every success for the future and I’m confident that their business will take off and become a well-known name in the region.”
