SHOPPERS got their skates on when a special synthetic ice rink opened at a North Tyneside shopping park last weekend.
More than 200 people took to the rink which has been set up at the Silverlink retail park in Wallsend, and which will be in place until Sunday, February 24.
Among them were young ice hockey and figure skating stars from Whitley Bay Ice Rink, and even a few with romance in mind for a special hour-long ‘Dating on Ice’ session backed by Capital FM’s Breakfast Show on Saturday morning.
Top coach Karen Brannen was also on hand to give tips to novice skaters.
The special rink was provided by Reading-based Ice Magic, whose previous clients include the Harry Potter films, Harrods and the Winter Olympics.
David Thompson, Ice Magic director, said: “We had a great time there and there was lots of interest as well, especially from the youngsters.
“We’ve had a lot of interest and the young skaters from Whitley Bay were great and I’m sure they’ve inspired a few people to have a go.”
Amy Hodges, marketing manager for Silverlink Shopping, said: “It was great and we had over 200 people taking to the rink.
“The shops at the Silverlink had given out lots of skating vouchers to customers, so I’m sure many of them are planning to visit over the next couple of weeks.
“It all went very well and the added element of the young ice hockey players and the skaters from Whitley Bay went down very well and added to the atmosphere.”
