River cruises involving the Shields Ferry will return this summer.

Nexus, which owns and operates the cross-Tyne service, will run a schedule of cruises from June to October.

Nexus said the service has proved popular with the growing number of international visitors flocking to the area.

Shields Ferry manager Carol Timlin said: “We are seeing growing numbers of tourists heading to the region each year and our Tyne river cruises give them a great chance to see the sights from a unique perspective.

“The cruises are popular with international visitors who are keen to learn more about the Tyne’s rich heritage, as well as with people who are from north east England.

“The coming months are the busiest time of the year for the Shields Ferry. We are all geared up for a packed summer of activities on board.”

Further details about the cruises and how to book tickets are available at www.nexus.org.uk/ferry or by calling Nexus on (0191) 202 0747.

All the summer cruises depart from South Shields ferry landing and pick up at North Shields ferry landing

And the ever popular ‘Fish and Chip Trips’ are back for 2014, while the musical themed river trips, a new feature in 2013, also make a comeback featuring singer Carol Lee.

Nexus will also operate its usual programme of three-hour ‘Sunday Afternoon River Trips’, which give people the chance to take in the famous sights of the river Tyne with an historical commentary.
