SMOKERS in the borough are being encouraged to ‘take the leap’ and quit the habit on No Smoking Day.
Nearly one in six adults in the UK smoke, including 22 per cent in the north east, but figures show that two-thirds want to quit.
The Newcastle and North Tyneside Stop Smoking Service will be at the Beacon Centre, North Shields, on Wednesday, March 14 – No Smoking Day – from 10am to 2pm.
They will be testing smokers’ carbon monoxide levels plus offer advice and support, with the campaign slogan ‘take the leap’.
Stop Smoking Service manager Christine Dryden said: “The benefits of not smoking begin within hours and boost not just your health but your wallet too.
“Thousands of smokers on Tyneside attempt to quit on No Smoking Day, so if you’re a smoker, why not take he leap and join in.”

No Smoking Day ambassador Duncan Bannatyne, said: “As an ex-smoker myself I know how hard it can be go give up but I promise it’s worth the effort.”
