Rotary Club of Tynemouth has donated £1,000 to support a charity’s work both locally and nationally.

Club president David Milligan handed over the donation to the Alzheimer’s Society’s community fundraiser Rebecca Scott at a recent meeting of the club.

The money was raised as one of Mr Mulligan’s charities of the year, and also included £457.53p collected recently at ASDA in Benton.

Mr Mulligan said: “I was delighted to present Rebecca with the £1,000 cheque for one of my yearly charities, the Alzheimer’s Society, who provide support services in the local area for people with dementia who are living with their families and also providing support to the family members.

“We were all impressed with the talk by Rebecca in which she outlined the many ways that society is tackling the ongoing problem of dementia support in our district and also nationwide.”

Rebecca said: “I am so grateful that the Rotarians gave their time to support the Alzheimer’s Society and raised such an amazing sum.

“It’s estimated there will be over 850,000 sufferers by 2015 and this donation will go a long way to continue our fight against dementia.”
