A teacher who overcame cancer is hoping to help others keen to lose weight.
In 2008, Ruth Branthwaite lost a one and a half thanks to help from the Slimming World group at Balkwell Community Centre.
But her life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in September.
In the months ahead Ruth was faced with a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, being prescribed with steroids which started undoing all her work at Slimming World.
She said: “To be honest my weight was not high on my priorities at that time. I had lost weight with Slimming World before and I knew that I would be able to do it again.”
In the summer of 2009, Ruth began a phased to return to work as a reception class teacher but found than none of her work clothes fitted and re-joined Slimming World.
She said: “Everyone was really friendly and there were target members who had been there previously. It was like coming home.”
Ruth lost more than two-and-a-half stone, still attends the Slimming World group at St Aiden’s in North Shields, and has given her larger clothes to charity.
Ruth said: “Following the Slimming World plan is really easy and you never feel hungry. I love trying new recipes and the whole family enjoys Slimming World meals – it doesn’t feel like you are on a diet at all.”
Ruth became a consultant and has become the new consultant at the Park Hotel, Tynemouth, which meets on Mondays at 7.30pm.
