Four sailors from clubs across the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) north east region have been rewarded for their years of service to the sport.

Quentin Mitchell from Whitley Bay, and Mike Shipway, from Cullercoats, join Julie Gibbon, from Bardon Mill near Hexham, and Christine Hughes from Hartlepool, who have each been chosen by the RYA Honours and Awards Panel to receive RYA Lifetime Commitment Awards.

David Wheldon, past Chairman of the RYA NE Region, said: “With over 150 years service in total between the four of them, these RYA Lifetime Commitment Awards could not go to better candidates.

“Sailing clubs throughout the country depend upon the selfless commitment and hard work of armies of volunteers.”

“Without them, sailing would not be the successful sport it has become,” he added.

Quentin was nominated by the Royal Northumberland Yacht Club, and Mike received his nomination thanks to Tynemouth Sailing Club)

The awards will be presented by HRH The Princess Royal, President of the Royal Yachting Association, at a ceremony in London on Friday, November 21.
