School takes opportunity with gold status award

A SCHOOL has taken a golden opportunity to improve sports provision for students.

Churchill Community College, in Wallsend, has been awarded gold partner school status by the Youth Sport Trust (YST) in recognition of their provision for PE and sport.

It is the first school in Tyne and Wear to have been granted the status, joining only 15 other schools throughout the country.

Headteacher David Baldwin said: “The award rightly recognises the pivotal position that sport plays in the life of Churchill Community College.

“Our young people benefit from high quality PE and sport and through this develop leadership and problem solving skills.

“The skills that we develop through PE and sports has been central to our success in raising standards in all subjects – and through our new YST gold status – we will continue to pursue this excellence for our young people and the local community.”

The school was invited to the National Education Business Awards at the Emirates Stadium, London, the home of Arsenal Football Club, where they were ‘Highly Commended’ in the Sports Award category, which is given to educational establishments that demonstrate outstanding commitment to developing the sporting skills of students.
