Seal of approval for new Olympic challenge

SEALS at an aquarium have been getting in the Olympic spirit with their own Games.

The harbour seals at Tynemouth’s Blue Reef Aquarium have been demonstrating their own aquatic athletic prowess by leaping out of the water through a set of five giant rings.

The idea came from the seals’ keepers and it’s already proving popular with both the seals and with visitors.

Blue Reef’s Anna Pellegrino said: “It was a bit of an engineering feat to actually manage to get all five of the rings suspended from the same pole and we had no idea how the seals would react to it.

“However, we shouldn’t have been worried as all four of them seemed to absolutely love their new challenge.

“Everyone here has got really caught up with the excitement of the Olympics and it’s great that we’re able to showcase the seals’ extraordinary athletic abilities as well.”

As well as jumping through hoops, keepers have devised a series of other exercise programmes for the seals both in and out of the water.
