A mental health service for children and teenagers has received national recognition for its work to make it more ‘young people friendly’.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) has received the ‘You’re Welcome’ accreditation for working in partnership with young people to enable them to influence how the service is delivered.

CAMHS, based at Albion Road in North Shields, provides mental health services to children and young people up to the age of 18.

Nurse consultant Theresa Maddison said: “We’re really pleased to receive this.

“You’re Welcome gave us the opportunity to step back and look at our service, the environment and our processes and how they impact upon the young people who access us.

“It allowed us to work closely with young people to ensure we were enabling them to influence how we deliver the service.”

Barbe Timlin, community psychiatric nurse, said: “Working towards the You’re Welcome accreditation challenged our assumptions of how young people want things to be, and made us think more about why we do some of the things we do.”
