AN OPTOMETRIST from Monkseaton had all eyes on him as he picked up a national award.
Michael Offord, who lives in the village, put his skills to the test after setting his sights on winning the award.
And he was named optometrist of the year at the national optometric conference.
Michael, who has more than 30 years’ experience, was shortlisted as one of three finalists from across the UK before being named the winner and presented with his trophy at the Association of Optometrists Award ceremony.
He currently runs Michael Offord Optometrists, an independent practice based in Kingston Park, Newcastle, which has more than 10,000 patients.
Michael said: “New technology has enabled us to provide more thorough examinations for patients with medical conditions.
“Some of the equipment you see today you might have only seen in hospitals 30 years ago.
“I am absolutely delighted to be honoured and recognised in this way, and so grateful to those who nominated me and most of all to those who voted for me.”
As well as sponsoring local community sports clubs, Michael is also passionate about the work he does with Vision Aid Overseas, making regular trips to Bukina Faso.
Dr Mike Guy, NHS North of Tyne medical director, working on behalf of North Tyneside Primary Care Trust, said: “Congratulations to Michael. It is a richly deserved award and exemplifies the excellent standard of care offered to patients.”
