A shopping parade is preparing to switch on its Christmas festivities.

Christmas lights at Whitley Lodge, in Whitley Bay, are being turned on at a special event from 3.30pm on Tuesday, November 24.

Money has been raised by Whitley Lodge Community Spirit through a variety of events, including its annual summer fair.

And thanks to a £200 grant from North Tyneside Council, every child at Whitley Lodge First School will be enjoying a free meal at Pantrini’s fish and chip shop at the event, which also includes carols by the pupils.

The festivities continue on December 19, with Santa in his grotto at Whitley Lodge Shopping Centre, a Christmas card competition and a raffle, with tickets available from any of the businesses.

Canon Sue Hart, chairman of Whitley Lodge Community Spirit, said: “We are very grateful to North Tyneside Council, specifically to Councillor Judith Wallace for their kind support for all that we are trying to achieve for the community at Whitley Lodge.”

Recent WLCS purchases have included a park benches, the flower planters outside the shops, and the Christmas lights on the lampposts.

Whitley Lodge Community Spirit is a non-profit organisation raising funds for the local Whitley Lodge area to run the Summer Fair and Christmas events by offering free or low cost activities for all the family to enjoy.

It is run by volunteers from the Whitley Lodge businesses, St Mary’s Church and residents within the area.
