Police in Whitley Bay have been given a helping hand by local nursery children.

Officers from the Whitley Bay Neighbourhood Policing Team visited Marine Park First School to tell them what they do.

Pc Julie Twigg talked to the children about her role, showed them around the police van and let them dress up as officers.

She said: “By taking part and engaging with schools and the children, it helps us teach them the importance of safety and when to contact police.

“From a young age, children are taught about emergency services and dialling 999. It also allows us to build relations with the schools and parents.”

Nursery teacher Claire Milburn said: “Allowing visitors like Pc Twigg to come in to talk to children about their jobs, allows children to understand from a young age the importance of police officers in our local community.

“It was also great fun for the children to look at and try the equipment on.”
