A NORTH Tyneside teenager this week collected her award for being named as the north east’s student of the year in a competition run by Sky Sports.
Samantha Burton, a pupil at St Thomas More High School in North Shields, won the prize as part of the broadcaster’s Living for Sport project.
The Year 11 pupil was one of 12 regional finalists from across the UK presented with their trophies at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
She was given her award by Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter Darren Campbell.
Campbell said: “Samantha really deserves this award. Her story is an inspiration, and it has been fantastic to meet her and recognise the journey she has taken to make positive changes to all aspects of her life.”
Samantha also won a £50 Adidas voucher and £500 towards her school’s next Living for Sport project.
