Volunteers are preparing to hit the streets again to raise awareness of homeless young people.

YMCA North Tyneside is holding its Sleep Easy fund-raiser again next month.

Participants will sleep rough on Friday, March 17, in St Cuthbert’s Church car park to raise awareness of youth homelessness and funds for the charity.

The night will include food provided by Zapatista and hot drinks from Tynemouth Coffee Company as well as competitions, games and some live music.

Last year’s event raised more than £5,500 towards the cost of three new self-contained flats within their main building in North Shields.

YMCA currently has 23 young people aged between 16 and 25 who can stay with them for up to two years.

In that time, they can access much-needed support with things like education, jobs, apprenticeships, counselling services and financial support.

Dean Titterton, YMCA North Tyneside chief executive, said: “We know from our experience of nearly 80 years working in the community that without the support we offer, many more young people would be sleeping on the streets and have less options and less chance of realising their potential.

“We are calling on the local community to sign up to our Sleep Easy event to help us support young people today and into the future.”
