An athlete from Wallsend is aiming to be one of the first to secure a place at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Sonia Samuels, who currently trains and lives in Loughborough, is hoping to find out in the next few days if she has been selected for the Great Britain team.

Sonia currently holds the seventh fastest time in history by a UK athlete and has run a full three minutes faster than the official qualification time.

She has had a fantastic 2015, slashing her marathon PB to 2:28:04 and selected to represent GB&NI at the European XC championships in Toulon, France

Sonia said: “To become an Olympian is would be the pinnacle of my athletics career, it is a dream I have held onto since I was 12-years-old.

“At times it has felt I was reaching too far but you have to dream big.

“I will have no regrets trying.”

North Tyneside Chairman, Coun Gary Bell said: “Sonia is a great example of what can be achieved with hard work and dedication.

“I would like to wish her the best of luck in her quest to be selected for the Great British team – and I know all of our residents will be behind her.

“We are incredibly proud of Sonia and hope she realises her dream of representing Great Britain (and Wallsend) in Rio next year.”
