Mother Nature gave an amazing display in the skies to welcome in the New Year that rivalled the efforts of fireworks displays all over country.

And several keen photographers captured the stunning display of the Northern Lights over the North East and Scotland.

Here is a picture of the aurora borealis taken by Michelle K Williams at St Mary's Lighthouse, Whitley Bay, at 9.25pm on New Year's Eve.

The display continued into the early hours of 2016.

Our photographer Jane Coltman and keen aurora-chaser was at Holy Island, Northumberland, and wrote: "The green arc was visible to the naked eye and spikes of colour danced in the sky."

Did you capture the spectacle on camera? If so, we would love to see your pictures too and we'll share them with our thousands of followers and readers.
