A sports fanatic says a sports apprenticeship has ‘kept him off the streets’.
Shaun Story is on a sport and leisure apprenticeship at the Lakeside Centre in Killingworth thanks to North Tyneside Council’s partnership with TyneMet College.
The 17-year-old said the role has been a positive driving force to begin a career in sport and leisure.
Shaun said: “My apprenticeship has been brilliant, I’ve learnt so much and I relish learning something new every day.
“Alongside on the job experience I’m getting a qualification from the college and I hope to start some additional courses at TyneMet including fitness instruction and lifeguarding through North Tyneside Council Sport.”
Claire Tennant, assistant manager at Lakeside Leisure Centre, said: “Shaun is a great asset to the team – he constantly demonstrates a real enthusiasm for the sport and leisure industry.
“He’s also brilliant with the customers and from the day Shaun started his apprenticeship I have seen nothing but an incredible commitment and determination from him to succeed. I’m very impressed with Shaun.”
Nick Probett, sports trainer at TyneMet College, said: “I’m delighted with Shaun’s progress – it’s very satisfying to see an apprentice really get stuck in and truly enjoy the experience.
“Shaun is a hard worker and I know he will go far. The College works hard to tailor the right candidate to the right apprenticeship vacancy.”
