Fundraisers are being sought to step out and take part in an inaugural event in the north east.

Maggie’s, the charity which provides free practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer and their family and friends, is bringing their Maggie’s Culture Crawl to Newcastle after ten successful years in London.

I really hope the local community gets behind the event to help us support as many people affected by cancer

Part night-walk, part cultural adventure Maggie’s Culture Crawl Newcastle will explore Newcastle discovering cultural, architectural and artistic delights.

The event – on Friday, September 18 – will take in eight miles of the city including Newcastle and Gateshead Quayside, Victoria Tunnel and the beautiful parks through Jesmond Dene, all whilst raising as much money as possible for Maggie’s Newcastle.

Kelly Knighting-Wykes, centre fundraising manager at Maggie’s Newcastle, said: “After ten years of spectacular events in London it’s wonderful to have a Maggie’s Culture Crawl taking place right here, taking in the sights and cultural gems of Newcastle.

“As a charity Maggie’s Newcastle relies on donations to continue to develop our unique, high quality programme of support.

“I really hope the local community gets behind the event to help us support as many people affected by cancer, as well as their family and friends, across the region.”

Registration for the event is £25 and participants are asked to raise a minimum of £100.

Among those taking part is 30-year-old Laura Tokell, a regular Centre visitor.

The mum-of-one was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in June 2014, and used Maggie’s to escape the hustle and bustle of the hospital when having her treatment.

She said: “I started using the Centre after my first chemo session back in July last year – it was great to be able pop in with family and friends and escape the hustle and bustle of the hospital.

“Although I mainly call in just to get away, I have also been able to take advantage of the other areas of support Maggie’s offer including benefit advice and emotional support.

“The centre has definitely made my journey over the last 12 months far easier.”

Laura, from Gosforth, added: “Last year when I was in the Centre I noticed the Culture Crawl for London which I thought looked a great way to raise money for Maggie’s.

“This year with it being here in Newcastle it means that I can take part and raise money with friends and family.

“It looks and sounds as though this will be an exciting event and I am proud to be involved.”
