Pupils have been showing their entrepreneurial spirit by finding ways to make a profit from just a fiver.

Year 5 students at Wellfield Middle School, in Whitley Bay, took part in Virgin Money’s ‘Make £5 grow’ scheme.

They learnt about business and developed skills in literacy, numeracy, creativity, leadership, problem solving and teamwork as they looked to make a profit.

Each pupil was loaned £5 from Virgin Money and in groups they had to plan, research and come up with a business idea.

Donna Waite, from Virgin Money, visited school last week to find out how the scheme had gone to find they had made a 200 per cent profit, making £835 from selling their wares.

Donna also presented all 84 pupils with their certificates to congratulate them on such an achievement.

Hayley McElderry, Key Stage 2 learning manager at the school, said: “Wellfield certainly have the entrepreneurial spirit; now to decide what to spend the profits on.”
