Families dug into the spadework with relish as the annual Whitley Bay Sandcastle Competition was held.

The event, which is in its eighth year, took place on the beach near the Rendezvous Cafe.

And despite some early drizzle, the sun came out to shine on the array of sandcastles and sculptures.

Winners Danielle and Jamie Gallagher claimed a medal and £10 gift voucher for their dragon creation.

Soroptimist International Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and District president Shirley Hallam, who presented the prize, said: “I have been supporting this free event for over six years and I am delighted to work with the Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade and North Tyneside Council to provide this family event. It is heart-warming to be part of a community event for Whitley Bay residents and visitors.”
