Residents can now make applications for housing benefit and council tax support online.
North Tyneside Council and its business partner Cofely said they are looking to improve services, including providing greater use of digital communications.
Cofely has invested in a new product that allows residents to submit a claim for housing benefit and council tax support online at www.northtyneside.gov.uk/benefits
The forms are interactive, validating information as it is entered and, based on that information, will guide the user to fill in the sections they need to.
Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “As a council we are committed to making it easier for people to access our services.
“We know lots of our residents are keen to be able to do more online, and this is the first in a range of new initiatives to maximise our use of digital communications”
Help will be available to people wishing to use the new online forms via surgeries and an appointment system
Support is available 7.30pm to 8pm Monday to Friday via staff within the Contact Centre, who will be able to help residents who may begin a claim on-line, but require some additional support.
There will also be some assisted sessions, held in the Customer First Centres each week. Customers can book into the sessions in advance and, if there is availability, join a session in progress.
Sessions can be booked via staff in the centres or by calling 0345 2000 101.
