Surfing stars head back to the borough

International surf stars will be rubbing shoulders with locals as a major competition returns to the borough.

Tynemouth will host the UKPSA North East Surf Open with two days of action taking place at Long Sands beach on Tuesday, October 29, and Wednesday, October 30.

Two times event champion Russell Winter is returning to defend his title, under the challenge of current tour leader Alan Stokes.

Dave Reed, tour director, said: “It’s great to be coming back to Tynemouth for the North East Open.

“Over the years we have seen some great waves and look forward to see the elite of British surfers compete in one of the most important events on the UK Pro Surf Tour.”

Coun Eddie Darke, cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “We’re extremely pleased to see the UK Pro Surf Tour return to Tynemouth for a seventh year.”

Pro Junior leader Luke Dillon, 2012 Pro Junior winner Jobe Harriss, Women’s leader Keshia Eyre of Portugal and U18 girls leader Peony Knight will be amongst those competing over the two days at Tynemouth.
