THOUSANDS of extreme sport enthusiasts are expected to gather at a major surfing event in Tynemouth this weekend.
The North East Surf Open, now in its fifth year, takes place off Long Sands on Saturday and Sunday where the best surfers from across Europe will be competing for the title.
Last year’s winner Russell Winter will be attempting to make it three in a row and at the same time regain his lead on the UK Pro Surf Tour.
Winter’s big rival and current tour leader Gordon Fontaine, from France, will also be competing.
Meanwhile, local surf star Sam Lamiroy, English champion Tom Butler and Welsh Open champion Jayce Robinson will also be in action.
Tour director Dave Reed said: “It is great to be heading back to Tynemouth. The people always make us feel very welcome and it’s brilliant to see so many people turn out to watch the competition year after year.
“We’ve had some great waves there over the past few years and we look forward to another competitive event.”
