Hardy swimmers braved chilly conditions to welcome in the new year.

More than 100 people – cheered on by hundreds more spectators – took the plunge for the traditional New Year’s Day dip at Whitley Bay beach.

Some who took part in the event – organised by the Panama Swimming Club – were raising money for charity while others braved the icy waters for fun or to clear their heads from any New Year’s Eve hangover.

Despite the air temperature being an unseasonal 13C, the temperature in the North Sea was still on the cold side for the swimmers – who wore a mix of fancy dress or bathing costumes.
