Free swimming lessons are on offer in North Tyneside as part of this year’s Drowning Prevention Week.

Swim North East is offering the lessons at Whitley Bay’s Deep Blue Dive Centre from Monday, July 20, to Thursday, July 24.

People can book by calling the Newcastle swimming school on (0191) 281 7678, quoting Drowning Prevention Week. Spaces are limited and will be offered on a first-come-first-served basis.

Drowning Prevention Week, run by the Royal Life Saving Society UK, ends on Sunday.

Matt Thompson, director of Swim North East, said: “Drowning can happen to anyone of any age, so it is really important that people brush up on their swimming skills.

“It is one of the only sports where learning how to do it can save your life, but it is not something that can really be self-taught like running.

“You need support and guidance to do it. That is where we can help.”

“We want people to enjoy the water, enjoy swimming and stay safe.”
